Alert:Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)  Cases Identified in India Two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory disease initially identified in Norway and recently causing significant concern in China, have been reported in India. HMPV is a highly contagious RNA virus that affects the respiratory tract, particularly in vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. The virus spreads via respiratory droplets and close contact, making standard precautions critical to curb its spread. These include: Frequent handwashing with soap and water. Avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms of respiratory infections. Wearing masks in crowded or high-risk areas. Ensuring proper ventilation in indoor spaces. Symptoms of HMPV include fever, cough, difficulty breathing, and general fatigue. Severe cases may lead to complications like bronchiolitis or pneumonia, especially in extreme age groups. Healthcare workers and caregivers must remain vigilant and follow strict infection control practices. Early detection, isolation, and supportive care are vital to managing the disease and preventing outbreaks. Public awareness and timely intervention can help mitigate the impact of HMPV. Let’s prioritize respiratory hygiene and protect the most vulnerable members of our society. Stay informed, stay safe.
