CME on Recurrence of Tuberculosis at ACME Hospital, Chembur Mumbai, 9th October 2024 – Dr. Rajendra T. Nanavare, Pulmonologist at ACME Hospital, delivered an insightful lecture on the “Recurrence of Tuberculosis: A Hurdle for TB Control” during today’s Continuing Medical Education (CME) session for General Practitioners at ACME Hospital, Chembur. During the session, Dr. Nanavare highlighted the challenges posed by recurrent tuberculosis (TB) and its significant impact on the global fight against the disease, especially in countries like India. He explained that TB recurrence, which can occur due to relapse or reinfection, is a major concern because it leads to higher mortality rates and complicates treatment outcomes. Dr. Nanavare emphasized that distinguishing between endogenous reactivation (relapse of the original infection) and exogenous reinfection (a new infection) is crucial for developing targeted treatment strategies. He also discussed how comorbidities such as HIV, diabetes, and drug-resistant TB make managing recurrence even more difficult. “Early detection through molecular testing, such as GenXpert, and implementing strong infection control measures are essential to curbing TB recurrence,” he stated. Dr. Nanavare also advocated for secondary preventive therapies, including Isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) and ensuring that HIV-positive patients receive adequate antiretroviral therapy (ART), to reduce the risk of recurrence. The CME concluded with an emphasis on the need for multi-sectoral collaboration, investment in TB research, and the development of new diagnostics and treatments to effectively address recurrent TB. Dr. Nanavare reiterated that ongoing vigilance in treatment, monitoring, and preventive interventions are critical in achieving TB control and elimination goals. The session was well-received by the attending General Practitioners, who gained valuable insights into managing recurrent TB in clinical practice. Dr. Rajendra T. Nanavare
